In less than 24 hours, over 60 of Philadelphia’s best restaurants will go head to head in what has become one of the largest and most anticipated burger competitions in the city. An eclectic mix of chefs will roll up their sleeves, fire up their grills and put their creativity to the test as they compete in the 5th Annual Burger Brawl– held on Sunday, June 14th from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Xfinity Live (1100 Pattison Avenue, Philadelphia). A panel of industry experts and over 5,000 burger fanatics will cast their votes for the “Best Burger”.

The Burger Brawl– founded by Rob and Maggie Wasserman (owners of Rouge and 500 Degrees)– began in 2011 as a friendly competition between 15 of their industry friends in the parking lot of their son’s elementary school. The goal? To raise enough money to update the school’s computer lab– which Rob said felt very “circa 1995”. he went on to explain, “You hear about how schools struggle to fund different programs, but you don’t really get it until your kids are affected by it. I thought– ok– this is a need I can do something about.”

2014 – The Burger Brawl and Olitsky Foundation donating a combined $900,000 towards literacy in Philadelphia Public Elementary Schools.

The event has increased in size each year—and so have Rob and Maggie’s philanthropic goals. This year, the Wassermans have partnered with the Olitsky Family Foundation, The School District of Philadelphia, and the AIM Academy to fund a four-year pilot program that will apply the private school model developed by the Academy In Manayunk (AIM), which utilizes technology to establish literacy in elementary age children. This groundbreaking program will serve as a catalyst to drastically improve the education process for Philadelphia’s children.
